K-9 Unit
The Canine Unit has one dual-purpose police service canine and was designed to give the Sheriff’s Office another tool to locate illegal drugs, find lost persons, pursue suspects on foot, uncover evidence, search buildings and most importantly, provide additional officer safety. The canine unit also assists in the detention facility with periodic searches and inmate control.
The Sheriff’s Deputy and their canine partner also provides assistance to other state and local agencies in the area.
The Canine Unit was formed in 1998. Since then, it has assisted the Sheriff’s Office in seizing over two million dollars in drug proceeds and property, and tracking numerous felons. When not engaged in one of these activities, the Canine Unit assists with patrol duties.
